The 911 Guardian Program is a program in which alerts are sent by telephone to participants in the program to check on their well-being. When the participants wish to sign up for the program, personnel in Community Services sets up a visit with the person and explains the program.
Proper paperwork is then filled out and the participant chooses a 4-digit code which is best for him/her to remember. They also inform us what day(s) and time they wish to be called. At that set day(s)/time, the system sends an automated voice telephone call to the participant, informing them to enter their 4-digit code, which means they are well and do not need assistance.
However, if they do not enter their code in a timely fashion or do not answer the phone at all, the program sends the Alexandria Police Department an alarm. At that time, we (APD) try to get in contact with the participant and/or their contact person. If no one can be reached, a uniformed police officer is dispatched to the participants address to see if further assistance is needed.
